|Bharatanatyam, believed to be the oldest of the classical Indian dances, is a highly structured art form that combines rhythmic footwork, intricate hand gestures, and subtle facial expressions. The classes will initially focus on the development and perfection of basic technique through adavus, the fundamental units of movement of Bharatanatyam. Students will be trained in the Pandanallur style of Bharatanatyam, which emphasizes energy, power, and precision of rhythm and movement. Students will also learn abhinaya, the communication of a mood or emotion through use of facial expressions, gestures, and body movements. Each class will begin and end with a series of stretches and yoga postures based on the Hatha yoga tradition.
